Fun Up Ahead - 36" x 24" Acrylic on canvas
While packing up my painting gear the first day working on this piece in Zion, two men in wetsuits came slopping down the rock. I hadn't realized there was a navigable slot canyon up ahead, so I investigated. I managed to scramble into the slot and it was really narrow and angled. I didn't get far due to the water and pour-offs, but it definitely looked like fun up ahead!

Red Canyon Camp - Acrylic on canvas 16" x 40"
Red Canyon is just to the west of Bryce Canyon and is really worth stopping there if you go to Bryce. I was lucky enough to get a campsite all to myself and paint (in the shade!) this intimate canyon up which I explored. You can see a micro-arch in the right side of the scene.

Sharing space for a moment - Acrylic on canvas 24" x 36"
In a quiet moment while I was having lunch, a little Canyon Wren scurried up and down the rock, popping in an out of sight as he ate his lunch too. This piece was painted in Zion National Park.

Dream Desert - Acrylic on Canvas 16" x 40"
When I think about the desert, this is it. My mind's eye pictures sunrise, the still before earth comes to life for the day, the low sun bringing the land into rich colors that quickly bleach out. A time to watch and be still, and simply enjoy.

Desert Origins - Mixed media 36" x 48"
The Utah desert is geology in front of one's very eyes. The source photo for this painting was taken close to Delicate Arch. A raven stopped by as I was taking the photo and enjoying the sunset, otherwise alone in one of my favorite places on the planet.

Note to Self - Mixed media 40" x 16"
For sale at Old Town Art and Framery, Fort Collins
$1100
The title to this piece refers to the need for gravel guards over ones boots when hiking down Muddy Creek, in Utah, the inspiration for this painting. I poured about a pound of gravel out of my boots every hundred yards or so! This painting works beautifully on a plain painted wall that needs a pop of color.

Forces At Work - Acrylic 36" x 24"
For sale at Old Town Art and Framery, Fort Collins
$1500
Painted on-site at Cove of the Caves in Arches National Park, this painting is a reminder of all the forces of nature that come to bear upon the land. It is a remarkable place, and I spent 3 peaceful days at this location fighting the speed at which my paints dried, but loving the solitude, the feel of the rock, and the ever-changing shadows.

Entrada Aura - acrylic on canvas 24" x 36"
On display at Lincoln Gallery, Loveland (Thompson Valley Regional Art Show) Sept 13-Oct 2, and at Fort Collins Creative Center (studio tour exhibit) Oct 16-27
$1500
Painted mostly on site at Arches National Park toward the north end, close to Skyline Arch, this piece reflects some of solidity and serenity of the rock formations. This is looking northward toward an unbroken section of a rock fin that would be extremely difficult to scale if one were so inclined. I spent three days in this location, so close to visitors and yet not a soul ventured my way. The piece can be combined with Entrada Avenue, which continues the view to the east.

Entrada Avenue - acrylic on canvas 24" x 36"
SOLD
Painted on-site at Arches National Park near Skyline Arch, this view looks eastward toward the Fiery Furnace, and continues visually from Entrada Aura. The rock formations almost seem like life forms from this angle, though what we are seeing is the narrow end of wider fins. I found this view compelling and chose to paint it because it beckoned me to hike toward the Furnace (where one needs a permit to enter). Thus it was for me, a temptation to break the rules.

Nightfall Near Moab - mixed media 16" x 40"

This is my first "night" painting. Derived from a source photo I took while making dinner at my camp along the Colorado River near Moab, this painting was an interesting experiment for me. I started with bright daytime colors and built up layers to emulate the darkness gradually descending upon the hillside, until the stars barely appear. The slight color allowed by the moon coming up in the east gives the slightest amount of color.

The National Parks in the UK are different from those in the US, in that people were living there long before they became National Parks. Land is privately-owned in most cases. Here, the moorland can be seen on the top of the glacial U-shaped valley that is typical of the North York Moors. Public footpaths and bridleways crisscross the region making the private land accessible to visitors.

This was painted plein air at Colorado National Monument over the course of 3 days. The elements are challenging for artists in the desert regions, and despite the use of retarders, the paint dries almost instantly in the arid climate. This particular painting was especially challenging due to its size and the afternoon wind - Jane bungeed and weighted the easel, painting with one hand holding onto the canvas. The painting now lives in Boulder, Colorado.
These complementary pieces can be hung separately or as a pair. Jane created two nearly identical paintings in greens and reds then played with mixing cut pieces of canvas to create the predominantly green and red versions of "Canyon".

Here, Jane experimented with creating 2 similar pieces, one out of painted canvas and the other in quilting fabric using different colors. She wove them together. It was quite a challenge (especially the fabric version)! The piece now lives with a person who devoted his life to the preservation of the US National Parks.
Road trip to Phoenix - 48" x 24" - acrylic on canvas

This piece is a good example of throwing a canvas in the back of the Jeep and seeing what happens. The first overnight camp was at Rabbit Valley in western Colorado. Jane had about an hour and a half to paint before darkness, so the sky and the distant mountains are of there. The balance was painted at Valley of the Gods, and so the piece is an amalgamation of the two locations. Fittingly, the piece now lives in Phoenix.
Looking south in the heat - mixed media on canvas

This mixed media piece incorporates some found objects - cottonwood seeds, tissue paper and screen door. The majority of the painting was done plein air at Colorado National Monument. The challenge for Jane was that the view faced south, and it is nearly impossible to find shade and still see the view. She found a place tucked into a cliff with a few trees overhanging to put the easel and stay somewhat comfortable. The shadows depicted on the canvas are reminiscent of the shadows the tree branches cast while the piece was in progress.

Fields of Blue was painted during the COVID lockdown. Like many artists, Jane found it a necessity to paint something to honor the times we lived through during the pandemic, and "Fields of Blue" is a tribute to the health care workers who sacrificed their time and sanity to serve the sick. The piece was inspired by the red poppies signifying war veterans of the United Kingdom, and the red background overlaid by blue poppies represents the war that the healthcare workers fought.

The magic of the desert southwest is never more apparent than at sunset. For inspiration, Jane used a section of a photo she took while driving (don't tell the police) northeast around the Arizona/Utah border. She used thin layers of matte medium and resists to create the light playing off the rock formations.

Eastern Extremities - acrylic on canvas 20" x 20"

This piece evokes the feel of desolation in the high plains of Colorado, looking west toward the Rockies. A familiar image of Horsetooth Rock can be seen in the lower left corner. The weather is really big out there - wide open for you to see the cloud formations and dramatic shifts during the summer afternoons. The sun is king and heat on the crops is only managed by the wind powered wells.

Life, work - it's all very organic and fluid, a laboratory. I always tell people: whatever your thing is, you just have to be in it. Jump in; you'll figure it out.”
